Which company backs a Hagerty policy?
Hagerty itself is not the company that pays your claims. The underwriting is done by one of two insurers, Essentia Insurance Company or Markel American Insurance Company, so one of those insurers settles covered claims. Hagerty Classic Marine Insurance Agency handles the everyday running of the policy, according to Hagerty.
The boat program is run with Markel as Hagerty's partner. On 15 September 2026, Markel's financial strength page listed Essentia as A from A.M. Best, A+ from S&P, and A2 from Moody's.
You'll deal with Hagerty's own in-house marine specialists from your first quote onward. You can get a quote online or by phone.
Hagerty's classic boat cover
For classics, Hagerty insures genuine Chris-Craft, Century, and Gar Wood boats in their original form. Collectible fiberglass boats made before 1990 are included too, as Hagerty lists.
Agreed value is the core of this cover. When the policy begins, you and Hagerty fix the boat's value, and if there is a covered total loss, that whole amount is paid.
On its classic boat page, Hagerty sets out these features:
- Agreed value
- Cherished Salvage, a feature of Hagerty's classic cover (Hagerty's pages name it but don't spell out the details, so ask about it when you get a quote)
- Emergency protection
- Cover for spare parts and tools
- Trip interruption
- Overland transport with no limit in the U.S. and Canada
For sailboats over 26 feet, Hagerty might request an out-of-water survey. That means the boat is inspected while lifted out, so the hull can be looked over. The classic program also allows club racing.
Hagerty programs by type of boat
Hagerty places boats into a few programs. Which one fits comes down to your boat's age, length, and speed.
| Program | Which boats |
|---|---|
| Classic | Genuine Chris-Craft, Century, and Gar Wood models in original form, plus collectible fiberglass boats from before 1990 |
| Standard | Newer boats up to 26 feet |
| High-performance | Boats with top speeds of 65 to 85 mph |
| Yacht | Boats longer than 26 feet |
Under the yacht program, rental reimbursement can pay up to $1,000 after a covered claim, according to Hagerty's yacht page.
The cost of insuring your boat
Hagerty's boat pages do not show set prices, so your cost comes from a quote on your own boat. The value side is easier to see: classic boats get an agreed value, and each program brings its own included features.
A known way to pay less is club membership. Belonging to most established collector boat clubs can earn you a sizable discount from Hagerty.

Questions people ask
Does Hagerty sell boat insurance?
Yes. Hagerty has worked in marine cover since Frank and Louise Hagerty started Hagerty Classic Marine Insurance in 1984. At first, their focus was on wooden boats.
What is the best marine insurance for an older boat?
It rests on your boat and its value to you. With a collectible boat, useful points to compare are whether an insurer pays agreed value, whether land transport is covered, and the rating of the company that would pay claims.
