Progressive boat insurance cost

A boat policy from Progressive can typically start at around $100 a year, according to the company. It doesn't share fixed rates based on boat value, so the only way to learn your number is to request a quote.

Two factors push the cost in either direction. Adding optional coverages raises it, while discounts can trim it down.

Which boats will Progressive insure?

In most cases Progressive will take on a boat valued at $500,000 or less and measuring up to 50 feet. In certain states that see frequent hurricanes, the caps come down, according to Progressive.

LocationMax lengthMax value
Most states50 feet$500,000
Certain hurricane-prone states35 feet$175,000

Certain watercraft get no coverage at all. Progressive turns down:

  • houseboats
  • boats used as full-time homes
  • steel- or wood-hulled boats
  • jet skis and similar personal watercraft valued above $27,000

Buying a policy doesn't call for a marine survey. That's a professional check of a boat's condition, something some insurers require.

Coverage included in every policy

Wreckage removal and fuel spill protection come built into every Progressive boat policy, according to the company. They pay for hauling away a wrecked boat and cleaning up spilled fuel.

The portions of a policy that pay to fix your own boat are comprehensive and collision. If you hold both, Progressive includes full replacement cost as standard on partial losses, so damaged parts get paid out at what new ones cost.

Extra coverages you can add

On its coverages page, Progressive lists a number of optional add-ons:

  • Sign & Glide on-water towing: covers a tow, a jump start, help off a light grounding, or a fuel drop-off.
  • Total loss replacement: open to the first owner of a boat that's no more than a single model year old. Should it be totaled within five model years, you get the money for a new boat.
  • Fishing equipment: pays replacement cost for your gear, capped at $10,000.
  • Propulsion Plus: mechanical breakdown protection, from $38 a year.
  • Hurricane haul-out: once the National Weather Service issues a hurricane watch or warning, it reimburses half the cost, up to $2,000, of having a professional lift the boat out of the water or have it moved to a safe harbor.

Discounts that can lower the price

On its boat page and discounts page, Progressive lists these ways to save:

  • holding more than one Progressive policy
  • completing a state-approved boat safety course
  • paying for the whole year up front
  • being a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary or US Power Squadron
  • holding USAA membership, in most states

Your deductible is what you pay out of pocket on a claim before the insurance kicks in. Progressive's disappearing deductible shrinks by 25% each claim-free period, eventually reaching $0.

Getting a Progressive boat insurance quote

Quotes are available online or by phone. Since no marine survey is required, there's no need to set up an inspection before getting a price.

Before you begin, it helps to have your boat's value, length, and hull material handy. Those details determine whether Progressive will cover the boat, and the limits are tighter in states prone to hurricanes.

Progressive boat insurance review

Progressive covers a broad mix of boats, with limits of $500,000 and 50 feet in most states, and every policy includes wreckage removal and fuel spill protection. There's also a wide menu of add-ons and discounts. AM Best, which grades insurers on financial strength, confirmed Progressive's A+ (Superior) rating in April 2025.

For some owners, the restrictions are the key point. There's no coverage for houseboats, live-aboards, or steel and wood hulls, and jet skis worth more than $27,000 aren't covered either. In certain hurricane-prone states, anything over 35 feet or $175,000 could be turned away too.

Common questions about Progressive boat insurance

Is Progressive a good choice for boat insurance?

That depends on the boat you have. Its A+ (Superior) rating reflects solid financial strength, and more than two million watercraft are insured with Progressive. Whether it's right for you hinges on your boat's type, size, and value, along with the quote you receive.

How do I file a boat insurance claim with Progressive?

Claims can be filed online, in the mobile app, or over the phone. According to Progressive, boat claims go to representatives with special training in boat claims.

Does Progressive insure fishing equipment?

It does, though it's an optional add-on. Your fishing equipment is covered at replacement cost, capped at $10,000.

Can a brand new boat be covered against a total loss?

It can, provided you're the original owner and it's no more than one model year old. With total loss replacement, a boat totaled within five model years is paid for with a new one.
