What the policy covers
The policies come from Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and its affiliated companies. You can choose from a few types of protection.
- Liability: covers damage you cause to someone else's property, and it also takes care of pollution liability and wreck removal.
- Uninsured boater coverage: helps pay for injuries when a covered accident involves a boater who has no insurance or who leaves the scene.
- Collision and comprehensive: protects the boat itself, plus the motor, trolling motor, trailer, and boating gear, both built-in and portable.
A crash is what collision handles. Other kinds of damage to the boat and its gear fall under comprehensive.
Optional coverages and packages
Extras you can add include:
- Towing and labor while on the water
- Roadside help for your boat
- Fishing gear
- Personal belongings, covered at replacement cost
- Rental reimbursement
If your boat trailer has insurance, Roadside Assistance comes free. Rental reimbursement stays an optional pick.
Packages are also available, grouping gear limits by boater type. Take the Deep Water Pros package: it offers up to $10,000 toward fishing gear, $5,000 toward personal belongings, and $2,500 toward towing.
Jet skis and other personal watercraft
A boat policy does not include Jet Skis, WaveRunners, or Sea-Doos. Those go on their own personal watercraft policy, which carries liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage. According to Nationwide, a specialized servicing group takes care of powersports needs.
Ways to pay less
These are the discounts Nationwide lists:
- Bundling more than one policy
- Insuring multiple boats (personal watercraft don't count)
- Completing a boater safety course
- Running on diesel fuel
- Paying in full
- Renewing without claims
You qualify for the claims-free renewal discount when your prior policy term had no claims. Since we do not list discount amounts here, ask which ones apply to your boat when you request a quote.

Common questions
How strong is Nationwide financially?
On November 7, 2025, AM Best confirmed an A (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating for the members of the Nationwide P&C Group, along with a stable outlook.
What does boat insurance from Nationwide cost?
There is no price we can quote, since the cost comes down to your boat and your details. Your figure comes from a quote through a local agent or by phone, and discounts may bring it down.
How does Nationwide stack up against Progressive or Allstate?
Their coverage details are not something we have here. The clearest way to weigh them is to compare quotes using the same boat, value, and coverage choices.
