What kind of boat?

Want a firm price for your boat? An agency quotes it by phone or from a short request. Calls go to Boat Insurance Compare, not to State Farm.

The one price it makes public applies to jet skis, which it says might cost somewhere between less than $100 and more than $500 annually. For all other boats, the number you pay is set by a quote.

State Farm boat insurance cost

The only public price range State Farm shares is for jet skis. That range sits at less than $100 to more than $500 annually. Nothing is published for pontoons, runabouts, sailboats, or bigger vessels, so asking for a quote is the only path to your actual cost.

Getting a quote

Starting a quote online is as simple as typing in your ZIP code. You can also request that an agent reach out to you. Both choices appear on State Farm's boat page.

State Farm wants a safety course completion certificate from everyone who will operate the boat. Gathering these ahead of time is smart, since missing paperwork can slow your quote down.

Boats State Farm insures

The coverage stretches across many kinds of watercraft, from tiny paddle boats up to vessels you could live aboard:

  • Canoes and kayaks
  • Personal watercraft such as jet skis
  • Bass boats
  • Pontoons
  • Runabouts
  • Wake boats
  • Sailboats
  • Yachts and cabin cruisers
  • Houseboats

What the policy covers

Your policy spells out which events it insures against. Those events include fire, theft, storms, sinking, collision, capsizing, explosion, and stranding. Stranding describes a boat that runs aground and becomes stuck.

How claims are paid

Repairs get paid on a replacement cost basis. In plain terms, the payout reflects what replacing the damaged parts would cost.

When a boat is a total loss, payment follows an agreed value basis. You and State Farm fix the boat's value at the start of the policy, which means the payout amount is known in advance.

Coverage options

On State Farm's coverage options page, two coverages focus on what comes after a problem:

  • Wreck removal: helps cover the cost of raising or clearing a wreck when the law says you must, following a covered loss.
  • Emergency service: helps cover certain emergency service bills tied to the boat, motor, or trailer.

Optional extras can be added as well. The insurance word for these is endorsements:

  • Fishing tournament fee reimbursement: gives back entry fees you cannot recover after a covered loss.
  • Uninsured or underinsured watercraft: covers your medical bills when someone with little or no insurance hits you.
  • Boat rental liability: protects you while you are operating a rented boat.
  • Boat rented to others: applies when you let other people rent your boat.
  • Rental reimbursement
  • Incidental commercial fishing

Our review of State Farm boat insurance

Three strengths stand out to us:

  • Each policy includes a dedicated agent, giving you a single person to turn to.
  • A total loss is settled at agreed value, while repairs are covered at replacement cost.
  • Many boat types are eligible, with extras aimed at anglers and at people who rent boats.

The biggest weakness is that jet ski owners are the only ones who can see a price ahead of time.

As for financial strength, AM Best measures how able an insurer is to pay claims. On November 14, 2025, it cut State Farm's grade from A++ down to A+ (Superior). Even so, A+ still sits within the Superior tier.

Questions people often ask

Is towing covered by State Farm boat insurance?

Nowhere on State Farm's boat pages does the word towing appear. Emergency service coverage is what they list instead. Ask your agent which expenses qualify as emergency service under your coverage.

Who underwrites the policy?

On the boat page, the named companies are State Farm General Insurance Company and State Farm Fire and Casualty Company, each headquartered in Bloomington, Illinois. State Farm Florida is listed too for that state.

What would insurance cost for a $20,000 boat?

No prices are published based on a boat's value. Getting a quote is the only route to a number for a boat worth that much.
