- Pontoon worth $35,000

- $600 to $1,280a year, inland to coastal states
Worked out with our method from Chubb and Progressive figures. An estimate, not a quote.
Covering damage to your own boat costs more. With liability cover, the insurer pays for harm or damage you do to others, not for fixing your own boat. For smaller recreational boats, Chubb gives average premiums of about $300 to $800 annually.
How does a pontoon's value affect its insurance cost?
Chubb says the typical owner pays somewhere between 1% and 5% of what the boat is worth each year. Your real price depends on the boat and where you keep it, and only a quote will tell you.
Your location plays a part as well. In 2024 to 2025, Progressive's average yearly boat policy ranged between $274.42 in Wisconsin and $867.86 in Florida.
Tritoon insurance
Insuring a tritoon works much the same as insuring a two-tube pontoon. Progressive says it covers nearly every kind of pontoon, from traditional models to tritoons and luxury versions.
You can also find add-ons from some insurers that protect the tubes. Cover like this is generally restricted to pontoons and tritoons that are 10 years old or newer at the time you take out the policy.
Coverage worth asking about
A pontoon has needs other boats do not, and a number of insurers sell extras or packages designed for it:
- Tube replacement. An endorsement is an extra you add to a policy. Certain pontoon endorsements put a brand-new tube in place of one that is punctured, creased, holed, or dented.
- Pontoon packages. Foremost sells a package designed for pontoons, while Farmers offers package deals aimed at pontoon owners.
- Total loss replacement. When the boat is written off, an option from Foremost pays as much as 20% above the insured amount toward buying another boat.
- Watersports liability. Progressive covers tubing, wake surfing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding, and waterskiing behind the pontoon without charging extra.
A lower deductible over time
Your deductible is what you pay out of pocket on a claim before the insurer covers the rest. With Progressive's disappearing deductible, a $1,000 deductible drops to $250 once you go three policy periods without a claim.
Is a homeowners policy enough?
Often not. Massachusetts insurance regulators note that homeowners policies offer very limited boat cover, in some cases only $1,000 for the boat, its motor, the trailer, and any accessories combined.
Details needed for a quote
For a Progressive quote, have these details ready:
- The year of the pontoon.
- Who made it and which model it is.
- A hull identification number, which you need to begin the policy.
The hull identification number is like your boat's serial number.
Questions people ask
Who typically has the cheapest boat insurance?
Prices vary by company, boat and location, so comparing a few quotes for the same coverage is a good way to find a good price.
What if my pontoon is over 26 feet?
Size limits exist on some policies. Markel's boat program covers pontoons up to 26 feet. If yours is longer, ask Markel about its yacht program.
