Jet ski insurance

Jet ski insurance can be fairly cheap.

Jet ski worth $8,000
$80 to $400a year, inland to coastal states
Jet ski worth $14,000
$140 to $700a year, inland to coastal states
Jet ski worth $20,000
$200 to $800a year, inland to coastal states

Worked out with our method from Chubb and Progressive figures. An estimate, not a quote.

Progressive says liability coverage can start at about $100 a year, and State Farm says yearly costs can land anywhere from below $100 to more than $500. What you pay will depend on the coverage you choose.

Jet ski insurance cost

Progressive says liability cover starts as low as $100 a year on brands like Jet Ski, WaveRunner, and Sea-Doo. Liability is the coverage that steps in if you injure someone or wreck their belongings.

State Farm estimates the annual cost of insuring a jet ski at anywhere from below $100 up to more than $500. State Farm doesn't break that range down, so the best way to see where you'd land is to get a quote for the coverage you want.

Own more than one jet ski? Progressive gives a multi-craft discount when you insure them together on one policy.

What is PWC insurance?

Insurers call jet skis, WaveRunners and Sea-Doos "personal watercraft," or PWCs for short. Nationwide offers a separate personal watercraft policy with liability, collision and comprehensive coverage. Ask what a policy's comprehensive coverage includes, since the details matter when you're comparing quotes.

GEICO says you can't tack a personal watercraft onto a boat policy, so it has to have one of its own. The Insurance Information Institute notes that these policies generally come with liability protection for activities on the water too, like towing a skier.

How a total loss is paid out

How much Progressive pays out depends on your jet ski's age. If your jet ski is totaled during its first three model years, Progressive pays what a brand-new one costs at this year's sticker price. Beyond that point, you get actual cash value.

After that, Progressive pays what your jet ski was worth on the day it was totaled, which is called actual cash value. BoatUS recommends this kind of coverage for smaller boats and jet skis.

Older than three model yearsActual cash value

You can also get medical payments cover up to $25,000 from Progressive. This pays for injuries to you, your friends, and your family, regardless of who was at fault.

Getting a jet ski insurance quote

Have a few details ready before you ask for a quote.

  1. Find out your jet ski's current value. Progressive won't cover any PWC valued above $27,000.
  2. Tell Progressive about any minors who will ride the jet ski. It asks owners to list them as operators on the policy.
  3. Bring up any modifications you've made. Progressive asks about upgrades since certain changes might fall outside your coverage.
  4. Ask for quotes with liability alone and with collision and comprehensive so you can compare the coverage and cost.

Common questions

Does homeowners insurance cover a jet ski?

In most cases, no. According to the Insurance Information Institute, homeowners policies rarely cover personal watercraft, and any coverage they do offer comes with low limits.

Am I covered if I take my jet ski to another state?

With Progressive, yes. Its policy applies everywhere in the US and Canada.
