What boaters face on Alabama waters

Do you need boat insurance in Alabama?

No law in the state forces you to insure a boat, according to Progressive. Even so, a marina may make liability coverage part of the deal when you rent a slip, so checking first is a good idea.

Rental boats follow a separate rule. Under Alabama's livery statute, the state may inspect rental boats to confirm they are safe, but the statute is silent on insurance.

What will an insurer ask about?

Getting a quote usually means answering questions about who drives the boat and whether the paperwork is current. The ALEA Marine Patrol Division handles registration for all pleasure boats and licenses the people who operate them.

  • Operator age: An Alabama vessel operator's license requires you to be 12 or older, and solo operation is not allowed until age 14. A licensed 12- or 13-year-old can drive only when a licensed person 21 or older is aboard and able to take over.
  • Jet skis: No one under 12 may drive a personal watercraft, and each person riding has to wear a life jacket.
  • Registration: Registering a boat from 16 feet to just under 26 feet runs $30. That is a $25 fee plus $5 for reservoir management.
  • Title: A title is the official paper showing who owns the boat. From January 1, 2024, Alabama requires one for any vessel used mainly in the state. Boats under 18 feet, jet skis included, only need one if the motor makes 75 horsepower or more.
  • Alcohol: Operating a boat with a blood alcohol reading of 0.08% or more is illegal. Alabama treats boating under the influence the same as drunk driving.
  • Accidents: You have 24 hours to report an accident to the Marine Patrol if someone is killed or hurt, or if the damage is more than $2,000.

Common questions

What does it cost to insure a $30,000 boat?
