What kind of boat?

Aluminum fishing boat and a pontoon at a wooden dock on a mountain lake, as kept by many Idaho boat owners

What you pay comes down mainly to your boat's type and value, so give us a call for a price on yours.

What affects your price?

Idaho had 92,501 registered recreational boats in 2024, the U.S. Coast Guard says, from little fishing boats to big cruisers. Every boat gets its own price, based mostly on its type, its value, and where it is kept.

To quote you a price, we ask for three details: your boat, its value, and where it stays. Give us a call and that is where we begin.

Does Idaho require boat insurance?

No. The state does not make recreational boaters carry liability insurance. Liability coverage is the piece of a policy that pays when you hurt someone or damage what they own.

Titling is a different matter. A title is the paperwork proving who owns a boat. The following boats need a title from the Idaho Transportation Department:

  • Boats with a permanently attached motor, model year 2000 or later
  • Financed boats, unless an exemption applies

The state also has no general boating education requirement. Only jet ski renters, people found guilty of boating under the influence, and those with repeat violations fall under it.

Idaho boating rules worth knowing

Idaho's annual registration fee starts at $20 for boats up to 12 feet, plus $2 for each foot beyond 12. That means a longer boat costs more to register each year. Registration is available from Idaho Parks and Recreation online, through vendors, or over the phone.

Idaho also has an invasive species sticker. The sticker runs $10 for motorized boats registered in Idaho, $30 for motorized boats from elsewhere, and $7 per non-motorized boat.

A few safety rules apply as well, and House Bill 548 changes how the Safe Boating Act is enforced from 1 July 2026:

Boating accidents in Idaho in 2024

For 2024, the state logged 39 recreational boating accidents, which left 4 people dead, 16 hurt, and $286,438 in property damage. One bad afternoon on the water can mean a big repair bill or a claim from someone you hurt.

A quick call gets you a price, so you can head out on your next trip knowing you're covered.

Common questions

What would insurance cost on a $30,000 boat?

A $30,000 boat sits between our pontoon and fishing boat examples, so a few hundred dollars a year is a fair starting guess. Call us with its type and where you keep it, and we'll give you a price for your boat.

How much does the average boat policy cost?

Progressive says the typical yearly boat policy it wrote in medium-cost states such as Idaho ran $413 in 2024 to 2025.
