Kentucky boating at a glance

Kentucky had 141,751 registered recreational boats in 2024, so you're never alone on the water. In that same year, the state logged 31 boating accidents, 8 deaths, 22 injuries, and $446,162 in property damage.

Accidents do happen, and a policy can cover the cost if one happens to you. Our team shops around for rates on your boat and helps you choose the policy that suits you.

Kentucky boat insurance rules

The U.S. Coast Guard's survey of state boating laws says "No" when asked if Kentucky requires boaters to carry liability insurance. Liability insurance pays when you hurt someone else or damage their property.

Even so, two groups can insist on it, per Progressive:

  • Marinas may want liability insurance in place before your boat can stay with them.
  • Lenders may want physical damage insurance, the kind that fixes or replaces your own boat, for as long as the loan is unpaid.

When a marina or bank gives you a deadline, call us and we can track down a policy that matches what they ask for.

Kentucky boating rules that come up when you get a price

Before you head onto Kentucky waters, check the rules for registration and who can operate your boat. These state rules are the ones that come up most:

  • Registration: If your boat has a motor and is used mainly in Kentucky, it must be registered through your county clerk.
  • Title: You must apply for a title and registration before you operate the boat.
  • Age: Operating a motorboat or jet ski with an engine of 10 horsepower or greater on public waters requires you to be at least 12 years old.
  • Boater education: Anyone between 12 and 17 years old needs to carry a Kentucky Safe Boating Certificate Card or evidence of completing an approved boater education course.
  • Jet ski times: Personal watercraft can only run from sunrise to sunset.
  • Rentals: Boats rented from a marina or boat livery need a lease agreement kept on board.
  • Ohio River: Boaters on the Ohio River may also answer to the laws of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, along with U.S. Coast Guard rules.

Officers from Kentucky's Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources enforce boating law on the water, while your county clerk handles registration and titles.

Registration fees by length of boat

Length of boatFee per year
Under 16 feet$22.20
From 16 feet up to 26 feet$42.28

Property taxes, clerk's fees, and titling fees are billed on top of these amounts.
