Boating in Nevada
Nevada had 42,020 registered recreational boats in 2024. In that same year, the state counted 39 boating accidents, four deaths, 24 injuries, and $1,880,388 in property damage.
No law makes you insure your boat, but accidents do happen. If your boat hits another boat, a dock or a swimmer, you could be the one paying. Call us and we'll tell you what protection would cost for your boat.
Do you need boat insurance in Nevada?
The state itself does not insist on it. The U.S. Coast Guard's review of state boating laws confirms that Nevada does not mandate liability insurance for people on the water. Liability insurance covers harm or injuries you cause to others.
Other parties can still demand it. Marinas can insist on liability coverage before offering you a slip. Call us before you sign a marina contract, and we will help you check that your coverage meets their terms.
Other rules and fees for Nevada boaters
The Nevada Department of Wildlife, usually shortened to NDOW, handles boat titles, registration, and boater education.
- Registration: all motorboats need to be registered. Sailboats with no motor, along with canoes and kayaks, are exempt.
- Registration fee: starts at $20 for a boat under 13 feet and rises to $100 for 31 feet or longer. A boat from 18 to just under 22 feet pays $40.
- Title: the first title for a new, never-titled, or out-of-state boat is $20.
- Invasive species decal: all boats using Nevada waters must carry this annual sticker, priced at $13 for motorized craft and $6 for non-motorized ones.
- Lake Tahoe: boats there go through a separate inspection. That sticker runs $70 for jet skis and boats 17 feet or under, and $115 for longer ones.
- Boater education: anyone born on or after January 1, 1983 has to complete an NDOW-approved course beforehand. It applies to motorboats with more than 15 horsepower on interstate waters.
- Jet skis: drivers must be 14 or older, and everyone on board, driver and passengers alike, must wear a life jacket.
- Alcohol: it is illegal to operate a powerboat or sailboat when your blood or breath alcohol reading is 0.08 or higher.
