What kind of boat?

What you pay comes down mostly to your boat's type and its value. Call now with your boat's type, value, and where you keep it, or use our three-step price range to see a range for your own boat. Our explanation of how our estimates are built is in our method.

Why consider coverage if it isn't required?

Boating is popular here. In 2024, Oklahoma counted 165,771 registered recreational boats, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

During that year, the state logged 49 boating accidents. Those crashes caused 14 deaths, 40 injuries, and $432,900 in property damage. If you cause an accident, you could be the one paying for the other person's injuries or boat, so call us and we'll help you find coverage that fits yours.

What the law says

The Coast Guard's state-by-state survey of boating laws lists Oklahoma as not requiring liability coverage, which is the part that pays if you injure someone or damage their property.

Rental companies follow a separate rule. They have to log every renter, boat, and trip and hold those records for six months or more, but that law) doesn't force them to buy coverage either.

Other rules for boat owners

They apply whether or not you insure your boat.

  • Title and registration: any boat on Oklahoma waters has to be titled and registered, with taxes paid, within 30 days of becoming yours. After that, you renew on a one-year or three-year cycle.
  • Boat and motor: each one is registered separately through Service Oklahoma, and renewals come due by July 1.
  • Registration fee: what you pay follows the boat's value and tops out at $151 for each boat and each motor.
  • Tax when you buy: when ownership changes hands, the state collects a 3.25% excise tax based on what the boat and motor are worth. An excise tax is simply a tax the state charges on the sale.
  • Carbon monoxide sticker: Andy's Law gives owners a warning sticker, which arrives with the first renewal after November 1, 2023, and it has to be placed somewhere visible inside the boat.
  • Young boaters: kids aged 12 to 15 need to complete a boating safety class before operating any boat with a motor over 10 horsepower, any sailboat of 16 feet or more, or a jet ski.
  • Jet skis: children under 12 can't drive one. Riders aged 12 to 15 must have an adult 18 or older watching from no more than 500 yards away.
  • Alcohol: it's against the law to operate a boat with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 or higher. A first conviction can mean a fine of up to $1,000).

Boating education is run by the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, while the Highway Patrol Lake Patrol handles enforcement on the water.
