Most boats kept in the state run a few hundred dollars per year to insure. Bigger cruisers push the price higher.

Boat Insurance in West Virginia

West Virginia counted 47,378 recreational boats registered during 2024, and people insure those boats voluntarily, not because any law says so. That year the state also logged 15 boating accidents, six deaths, eight injuries, and $21,000 in property damage.

What you pay comes down to your boat's type, its value, and where it stays. Call now, tell us about your boat, and we will give you a price range.

Does West Virginia require boat insurance?

Asked if West Virginia makes boaters carry liability insurance, a U.S. Coast Guard survey of state boating laws answers "No." Liability coverage handles the damage you do to others or their things while operating your boat.

Some marinas may require it before they let you keep a boat at their docks. Ask your marina ahead of signing up for a slip, since proof of coverage might be needed.

Businesses carry the legal insurance duty, not individual owners. Rental operations, called liveries under the law, must hold liability insurance of at least $300,000 along with a license plus a surety bond.

West Virginia boating rules insurers ask about

Insurers ask who operates the boat and whether the title and registration are in order. Here are the state rules that matter:

  • Education: A boating safety education certificate is required for anyone born Dec. 31, 1986 or later who wants to drive a motorboat or personal watercraft.
  • Age limits for jet skis: Nobody younger than 15 may operate one. Kids 12 and older can operate one when someone 18 or older rides along.
  • Title: Every motorboat in West Virginia needs a title, a rule that took effect July 1, 1989.
  • Registration: The DMV registers boats on a three-year cycle. Registering a motorboat 16 to 25 feet long for three years costs $45.
  • Small engines: A boat with a motor under 3 horsepower, or an electric motor rated under 70 pounds of thrust, must be registered anyway, though it costs nothing.
  • Drinking: Blood alcohol content tells how much alcohol sits in your blood. Operating a motorboat at 0.08% or more counts as a misdemeanor. Punishment runs from one day up to six months in jail, with at least 24 hours served, plus a fine of $100 to $500.
  • Reservoirs: On reservoirs owned by the government, any boat carrying a sink, toilet, or sanitary system cannot launch until that system gets removed, sealed, or routed to a portable tank.

Boating law and education fall to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Titling and registration go through the DMV.
