What does Wyoming require?
No Wyoming law says you must carry boat insurance, and the U.S. Coast Guard's survey of state boating laws records a "No" on mandatory liability insurance for the state. That said, certain marinas can still require boat liability coverage, according to Progressive.
Wyoming boat owners do face other rules:
- Registration: Every motorboat used on Wyoming waters has to be numbered, meaning registered through the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. The fee is $30 for a single year, or $80 if you register for three, rising to $40 and $110 once you add the invasive species decal.
- Title: From January 1, 2010 onward, any motorized boat must hold a title issued by your county clerk before registration is possible. Boats that are new or changing hands also need proof that Wyoming sales tax has been paid.
- Invasive species decal: All watercraft have to show one. The price runs $5 to $30 based on the craft type and your place of residence.
- Inspection: Any watercraft brought into Wyoming between March 1 and November 30 needs to clear an invasive species inspection before it goes in the water.
- Young operators: Anyone younger than 16 cannot operate a numbered motorboat, jet skis included, unless an adult of 18 or older is on board and in charge of running it.
- Safety course: Boating safety education is not required in Wyoming.
- Alcohol: Running a motorboat with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent or above is against the law. The penalty can be a fine of up to $750, jail time of up to six months, or both, and you can also lose your right to boat for as long as two years.
- Accidents: If your watercraft is involved in an accident on Wyoming waters, notify a Wyoming law enforcement agency immediately.
